Want to
be a Guitar Hero?
I
don't know, what's the world coming to... many people prefer to
imagine playing rock guitar on a video game or take part in "air
guitar" competitions rather than play the REAL thing! Maybe they think
it's too hard, or that it'll take too much time to get good.
It's not true, you can learn the basics of rock guitar in a few lessons!
A good starting point is to see how a rock band is made up...
These are the basic elements of a rock, pop or blues band:
Drum kit The drums lay out
the rhythmic foundation of the music. The 3 most important elements are
the kick drum (big drum played by right foot), the snare (higher pitch,
played with left hand) and the hihats (a pair of small cymbals closed
together, high pitch, played with right hand))
Bass guitar
When we listen to music, we enjoy it more by
hearing a good balance of low and high frequencies. So in a nutshell,
the bass guitarist supplies the low end!
Guitar The electric or
acoustic guitar has the role of supplying the harmony, the chords, to
the melody sung by the vocalist. And let's not forget, the guitar solo!!
Because of the diverse roles the guitar can take, there are often two of
them in a band.
Keyboard Some might prefer
not to hear a keyboard in a rock band, as it might compromise the
"powerful" sound of guitar, bass and drums. However, the presence of a
keyboard (or piano) in a band creates many more sonic possibilities, as
it has a larger range of notes, and the option to choose an appropriate
sound for the song: piano, organ, clavinet, strings...
Our Lessons
Our guitar lessons won't be limited to simply sitting down and playing
guitar... I want to open your ears to the sounds we eventually want to
make. So it's important to learn about the above-mentioned elements.
Often in lessons, when I've taught you how to play a blues on the
guitar, I will then sit at the keyboard and play with you- it will then
start to feel like we're playing real music! I might then ask you to
pick up the bass guitar so you can learn its role...
Rock Band
After we've had a few lessons, I aim to get you to meet and play with
one or two of my other students, so you can learn the important
principles of playing in time, and the most important skill, listening!
We can then develop a repertoire of songs that we play together in
threes or fours... and who knows, if you like, we can aim to perform
them to an audience... seeing the birth of your Rock band!
If
you already have a band, I will also be happy to come to your rehearsals
to help you solve any problems you have with composing, arranging or
performing your music.
