Introduction
Hi, I'm Jules Faife, a guitar teacher based in
Ealing, west London. The purpose of this site is to give prospective
students an idea of how I teach guitar.
Professional Experience
I have a wide professional experience of
different styles, including jazz, pop, African, Indian music and
Flamenco. I've performed at major London venues such as the Queen
Elizabeth Hall and Hammersmith Apollo, and have played at several
international festivals. I have also arranged and directed music for
live BBC radio broadcasts.
Teaching Experience
I've been teaching guitar and bass since
2000. I've taught school workshops, summer "rockschools"
and also toured on the Live Music Now scheme, founded by Yehudi
Menuhin. I am the current guitar teacher at the Arts Ed school in
Chiswick www.artsed.co.uk.
Approach A
strength of mine is to present new techniques and musical ideas to
the student in an undaunting and accessible way, while at the same
time making sure I am stretching the student to improve... it's
important for all musicians to spend some
time "out of the comfort zone"!
I always try to present a song or piece of music that the student
will enjoy, and introduce one or two new concepts in that piece.
Acoustic or electric guitar? I can
teach you either... it depends if you're more into the folky bluesy
feel of the acoustic and want to play along to songs that are more
individually orientated, or if you prefer the lead/ rhythm role of
the electric guitar in a rock/ funk/ jazz band.
Other Assistance If the student would like me to help them
learn to play a song they've heard from an album, I can work out the
chords and help the student play it, if it's at an appropriate level
for them. I can also help the student with their own songwriting-
this can involve writing out the chord structure and working on the
timing of their rhythm playing.
Rates £28 for an hour's
lesson at my house. I will add transport costs
(£5 on average) to teach you at your house.
Why £28 an hour?
This higher-than-average fee reflects the quality of
service and the extra work I put in. As well as supplying the student with a folder and a CD of
songs to play along to, I make an interactive webpage tailored to
the level of the student, together with soundfiles and Word
documents explaining the relevant subjects. I update this page every
week after our lesson, so the student can practise the material at
home.
