Advanced Guitar

Jazz voicings We look at chords such as major 7th, sixth, minor major 7th, and extensions of dominant chords, such as 9th, 11th and 13th.

Advanced rhythm We study more advanced rhythmic principles, such as straight and swung semiquavers, compound times such as 12/8, and unusual time signatures like 5/4, 7/8, and 9/8.

Slash chords Normally the bass note of the chord is the same as the name of the chord, e.g. an A major chord has a root A. Slash chords are ones which have a different bass note.

Example 1: A/C# (A major with a C# bass note)

Example 2: Am7/G (A minor7 with a G bass note)

Modes and other scales Using the knowledge of modes we got at intermediate level, we look at pieces that use one mode all the way through, and pieces that use a sequence of modes for improvisation. Here is a description of the Phrygian mode, and two scale patterns: modephrygian.doc  quavers.mid  semiquavers.mid

We also look at diminished, whole tone and melodic minor scales.

Intervals To develop the principle of I, IV & V that we learnt at intermediate level, we look at other common interval sequences like II-V-I and I-VI-II-V.

Jazz standard chord sequences Knowledge of the above intervals will help us play some of jazz's standard chord sequences, such as a 12 bar jazz/blues, 32 bar "Rhythm Changes" and Coltrane "Giant Steps" changes.

Walking bassline This bassline, played on the beat in a 4/4 bar, is not only useful for bass players to understand, but also for guitarists, pianists and whoever plays jazz. This technique brings together knowledge of chord sequences and scales. Here is an example of a bassline played over "Rhythm Changes": jazzbass.mid

Chord and Bass style The great Joe Pass was the master of this approach, playing the walking jazz bass on the guitar while at the same time holding down the chords to the song (and sometimes playing solo lines too!). I'll show you how to syncopate the chords around the bass... timing is the key!

Bossanova guitar (made famous by the Brazilian composer A.C. Jobim and guitarist Joćo Gilberto) is also a great way of playing bass and chords together.
